WEST ENCOUNTERS EAST WINS TWO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDSMiami, FL, April 28, 2014 – West Encounters East, a documentary film by Miami-based filmmaker Stella M. Holmes, has been recognized with two important industry accolades. The documentary was named a Silver winner in the 35th Annual Telly Awards, and Ms. Holmes received the 2014 Brazilian International Press Award in the Cinema and Film category. Released in 2013 by PBS, West Encounters East explores the themes of immigration, alienation and assimilation through the works of Japanese-Brazilian artists, descendants of a century-old diaspora that has given São Paulo, Brazil, the largest Japanese population outside Japan.

In August, West Encounters East opened the Brazilian Film Festival of Miami (BFF). West Encounters East and Morikami Museum Launch Tanabata Exhibit June 7, 2013 – Stella M. Homes, executive producer of the PBS documentary film West Encounters East, presented a showing of the film’s trailer at a private reception attended by 200 guests at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. Among dignitaries attending were Ambassador Hélio Vitor Ramos Filho, consul general of Brazil and Mr. Masahiro Ogino, deputy consul of Japan in Miami. The event launched the opening of Morikami’s new exhibit, Tanabata: Japan’s Star Festival –Views of Tanabata in São Paulo, Brazil, featuring photography by Jade Matarazzo, which will be on view through September 15. West Encounters East was the inspiration for this exhibit, and the trailer for the film, running in a continuous loop, complements the photography.
Public Television Documentary Introduces Japanese-Brazilian Artists to US Audiences. São Paulo Reception Celebrates Trailer Release.
